My W58 has been going fairly strong for the last 4 years on 417rwhp. I say "fairly" because fifth gear will grind if I'm traveling 70+ mph & try to shift back into it due to a worn synchro. Granted, my car is not a DD & I do baby it - heavy acceleration only from a roll & I try to be extra gentle on the 3rd gear, as I hear that is the most common one to *pop*. I recently had my car re-tuned & now have more hp. We'll see how long the W58 can go.

Track Your Order
https://carsinspections.com/transmission/which-car-have-w58-transmission/
It shifts smoothly:

3rd gear on the W55 is better in my opinion. It was the power gear and the car hauled ass. It does the same in the W58, but not as much. 4th havent done much testing, but its the same as its 1:1, so it cant be any different. 5th, is long. You will most definetely get better gas mileage with this gearing. At 70+ MPH the Tach is well under 3k RPMS.

The Toyota W Series 4 and 5 speed transmission was engineered and manufactured by Toyota.
